<dc:description xml:lang="it">Rappresenta il mondo conosciuto aggiornato alle scoperte geografiche dell’epoca, in particolare quelle dovute ai viaggi di James Cook (1728–1779), che aveva completato tre celebri circumnavigazioni e ridefinito in modo decisivo la conoscenza europea di Oceania e Pacifico.
Mostra l’Australia (spesso denominata ancora New Holland) con coste meglio delineate rispetto alle mappe precedenti. Segnala le isole del Pacifico scoperte e descritte da Cook e da altri navigatori coevi. Rende conto delle rotte di circumnavigazione.
Questo genere di mappe aveva un grande impatto culturale e politico: mostrava l’espansione marittima britannica e l’importanza della cartografia come strumento di potere.</dc:description>
