Il quartiere ad ovest del Piazzale I. Strutture e ritrovamenti delle terrazze mediana e superiore

Lo scopo di questo lavoro è la pubblicazione di due strutture del periodo Protopalaziale (XX-XVIII sec. a.C.) situate nel quartiere ad Ovest del cortile occidentale mediano (Piazzale I), del Primo palazzo di Festòs. Queste strutture scavate da Doro Levi, direttore della Missione Archeologica Italiana, nel 1965-1966, non sono mai state oggetto di un adeguato ed approfondito studio dell’architettura e dei ritrovamenti portati alla luce. Con questo lavoro si è invece provveduto per la prima volta ad un’analisi stratigrafico-architettonica delle strutture scavate e ad uno studio sistematico di tutto il materiale rinvenuto al loro interno. Grazie alla successione di livelli individuata, si è ottenuta una sequenza ceramica valida per l’intero centro di Festòs, che copre tutto il periodo Protopalaziale, dal MM IB iniziale al MM IIB. This work, based on my 2007 ma dissertation for the Italian Archaeological School at Athens focuses on two Protopalatial houses of Phaistos (Crete), excavated by the Italian Archaeological Mission. These are located in an area known as the ‘Quarter West of the West Court’ (Piazzale i) of the Phaistos palace. The first excavations of these houses were undertaken by Doro Levi in 1965-1966, and further soundings were carried out by Vincenzo La Rosa in 2001. The houses were briefly discussed in monographs by Levi and Carinci (Levi 1976; Levi, Carinci 1988) and in short articles by Levi and La Rosa (Levi 1965-1966; La Rosa 2002a). These publications, however, did not provide adequate and systematic analyses of their architecture and finds. The revision of Levi’s excavations of these Protopalatial houses, which I conducted from 2001-2006, has clarified the architectural phasing and uncovered a full depositional sequence from Early mm ib to mm iib. My work is part of a project of excavations and revision of Levi’s work which Profs. Vincenzo La Rosa (Centro di Archeologia Cretese, Catania) and Filippo Carinci (Ca’ Foscari University of Venice) have been directing since 1994, with support from the Italian Archaeological School at Athens. The analytical study of stratigraphical/contextual data and mm ib-mm ii ceramics retrieved from these two houses has been my starting point for attempting a new definition of the ceramic sequence of Protopalatial Phaistos, which was partially (only phases a-b-c) published in 2009 (Caloi 2009a). The publication of the architecture and large mm ib-mm iib ceramics assemblages from these two houses will therefore provide an important illustration of the first crucial phases of the palatial site of Phaistos and contribute to a better understanding of the history of this important Aegean Bronze Age site.
