Il libro si concentra sulla fortuna editoriale e sull'immaginario costruito da fonti laiche e missionarie europee del XVI secolo sul Giappone. L'autrice esamina i processi culturali ed economici che hanno portato alla circolazione o, in alcuni casi, alla mancanza di circolazione delle fonti. Esplorando l'interazione, nei loro contenuti, tra "fattualità" e "mito", tra "immaginario classico" e "osservazione attuale", indaga il modo in cui la loro rappresentazione del "Giappone" riflette le immagini e i desideri dell'"Europa". Infine, usando il mondo editoriale italiano - che all'epoca dominava il mercato europeo dei libri - come caso di studio, l'autore analizza le fonti pubblicate dal punto di vista della bibliografia storica, valutandone l'impatto sul pubblico. The book focuses on the editorial fortune of and on the imaginary built by sixteenth-century European lay and missionary sources on Japan. The author examines the cultural and economic processes that led to the circulation, or, in some cases, the lack of circulation of the sources. By exploring the interplay, in their contents, between ‘factuality’ and ‘myth’, between ‘classical imagery’ and ‘current observation’, she investigates the way their depiction of ‘Japan’ reflects ‘European’ self-images and desires. Finally, using the Italian editorial world – dominating the European book market at that time – as a case study, the author analyses the published sources from the perspective of historical bibliography, evaluating their impact on the readership.
